The book is called unthinkable, and I'm pretty excited for it.

UNTHINKABLE is edgy spy thriller with roots in a controversial, real-world government initiative. Shortly after September 11, 2001, the Defense Department commissioned "think tanks" comprised of some of America's most darkly imaginitive writers. Since the 9-11 attacks seemed like something out of a Tom Clancy novel, the Pentagon asked these writers to come up with worst case terrorist scenarios. Their hope was that if our best writers could come up with these nightmare plots first, we could devise defenses before our terrorist enemies thought about, let alone planned, the next 9/11.

UNTHINKABLE tells the story of Alan Ripley, a (fictional) writer who joins this real life think tank, only to find that the devious terror attacks he imagined have started to come true. Realizing someone is using his imagination as a blueprint for terror, it's up to Ripley and his fellow Think Tank members to stop these unthinkable attacks they unwittingly planned from becoming reality.

I hope this Wednesday, when you walk into your local comic shop, you'll ask your retailer to pre-order the first issue by giving them the pre-order code of MAR094127. If my pitch isn't enough to convince you, than I'm hoping that THE UNTHINKABLE ARG (Altered Reality Game) will. I think this is the first time something like this has ever hit comics.

An "ARG "is an interactive, online game that uses the real world as a platform. The UNTHINKABLE ARG, created by mark and a marketing team headed by BOOM!'s Chip Mosher, is the world's first ARG for a comic book. Starting now, by going to www.wolfpackpmc.com, you can sign up to apply for an intelligence position in The Wolfpack, a (fictional) Private Military Contractor. Next week, those of you who are accepted into the Wolfpack's training program will be tasked to search the internet for clues that can help them apprehend the dangerous characters in the book.

At the very least, the ARG is a way to get the kind of supplementary material found in books like Watchmen to readers for free. More than that, it gives you a chance to interact with UNTHINKABLE'S fictional players in a very real way. I've spent nearly as much time crafting the game as I have the comic, integrating the world of UNTHINKABLE into our own. It's completely free to play, and there's a tangible prize for the winner(s).

I'm looking forward to it, you should be too.nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-42418358832366160492009-02-25T06:14:00.000-08:002009-02-25T06:25:16.478-08:00some movies i'd like to see.

nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-76200327924467928472009-02-18T15:43:00.001-08:002009-02-18T15:49:41.536-08:00liz. filardi.I guess my sister is taking a class on being internet famous? The reason for this is as yet unknown, although it has been hypothesized that the high levels of antioxidants found in coffee may play a role in preventing dementia and Alzheimer's. Alternatively, some studies have shown that coffee can protect nerves, which may help prevent Alzheimer's. If you don't want the games spoiled, don't read this.

So i finally got around to playing tomb raider anniversary. I had picked it up in a slew of games on black friday. I've never really saw the appeal of tomb raider before playing anniversary but the series has gone on to a whopping 8 games so i assumed that there was something to it that i had missed. Anniversery is a remake of the first tomb raider game which came out in november 96 so I figured it was a good place to start if i was going to start. I got the first one from my grandfather on my mom's side for the pc way back when it first came out, but i think i was too young to understand what i was getting into. I had picked it out, and when i did I think that my thoughts at the time were "boobs and guns" which isn't really what tomb raider is about. Having just played both tomb raider aniversery and tomb raider legend, it is no surprise that i was immediately frustrated because there was barely anything to shoot at and at the time I had no appreciation for the 3-d platformer. I never even got to the T-Rex in TR1 and was glad to put it down and pick up goldeneye.

My taste in games has changed over the years and i love games like portal and puzzle quest where you don't actually shoot at anything. I picked up anniversary on a whim. Those of you that haven't played it but have had a passing interest in the series should really pick it up. The isolation you experience coupled with the huge beautiful expansive areas to play through make this game an amazing experience. The main plot is ok, but what really got to me was Lara's first kill. The game does a fantastic job of making you really feel the consequence of your actions and gives Lara a real personality by making her silently regretful for the murder she has committed. In my opinion the story absolutely peaks there. To hammer the emotional point of killing a person home, the enimies that you encounter in the game are all wildlife. This also creates these massive feelings of regret. You are in these creatures homes and attack them with guns for no other reason then to pass through. They are not bad people or any creature that deserves a bullet- the wildlife is just there. Anniversary does a great job of making you feel like every time you have to fire your gun you wish you didn't. Offhand i can't think of any other game that has done that. The platforming at times comes across very straightforward, but in later levels I found myself getting a little lost (in a good way) in a few areas where there were multiple ways to do things. By the time you get used to the controlls and types of puzzles presented, you can easily move through rooms in these really amazing fluid ways that feel fantastic to play. The game does a great job in giving you just enough options to make you think about how to approach the situation, but not overwhelm you.

After being so jazzed about anniversary i picked up legend. Now- I enjoyed legend... but.... not nearly as much as anniversary. I understand that it is game 7 and that anniversary is game 1 in the tomb raider franchise, but i really thought they were also trying to reboot the series. The once silent contemplative remorseful Lara has completely changed. In the first level she has absolutely no problem mowing down faceless bad guys with a machine gun. That is all well and good for a game mechanic I guess, but it was a bit disappointing. I liked that Lara was making moral decisions with consequences. Choosing deliberately to kill and regretting it. Here in legend we have the same old video game story. Three or four types of bad guys over and over again that don't mean anything at all, only to serve as a place to put your bullets. Which is fine, but certainly doesn't emotionally rope me in and after the first game it isn't where I expected the franchise to go. That coupled with her awful banter over the wireless with the Zip the hacker back at home makes this game feel very very different then anniversary. The isolation is gone. Zip even helps you with puzzles before you are actually even starting to explore the room taking some of the problem solving thrill out of it. It was like having someone who has already played backseat game me. I want to make my own mistakes and learn to handle the situations the game throws at me, not have a puzzle and solution all at once. Plus- because of the mindless banter they exchange the whole game, nothing seems like it has any kind of emotional weight to it. Everything is business as usual rather than life hanging in the balance. I wouldn't mind the exchanges so much, if they actually meant something. I feel like legend also takes a few miss steps in the plot. I loved the last boss fight, the exchange that Lara has with her mother in the past was a great twist and something i really didn't see coming. That whole exchange and the exchange with Amanda afterward was great. However, i would've liked to have a little more emotional investment in Amanda's character. Lara seems regretful i guess because she flat out tells me she is, but it would be nice to have Amanda be more than a character you chase down a hallway. That way the player has a connection to her and Lara doesn't have to inform the player about the connection that you should be having. The choice of letting Amanda live when she was semi responcible for killing/taking your mother away as a child needs this emotional connection between Lara and Amanda to feel right. Otherwise you only wonder why Lara, who had no problem piling up bodies for the last 8 levels just didn't put a bullet in her and be done with it. Also, how the fuck is this game going to allude to yetis in the beginning with young lara's drawings and then not put a single fucking yeti in there? The whole game i was waiting for that shit! I also would've liked more than a nod to the scion with the pattern on the floor. In fact, some more story telling referencing anniversery would've been good. Other than those major things, i felt like it played short with an emphasis more on combat then on platforming. I would've liked more puzzles. I feel like i got one good (if that) puzzle per board and out of the 8 levels i think i did all of them in under 40 minutes each. Some WELL under 40. The subtle nods to the soul reaver world was fun though, and made me want to play those games over again.

I would recommend anniversary to anyone that loves 3d platformers and puzzles. I would only recommend legend to people that already love tomb raider.nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-79903127603415841922008-12-21T23:22:00.000-08:002008-12-21T23:23:15.902-08:00THAT JUST HAPPENED!nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-27915741145173257782008-12-17T15:09:00.000-08:002008-12-17T15:20:12.890-08:00john oliver
I am a regular listener of the bugle. Valve puts great games out on the source engine which isn't a resource hog, so i'll probably be able to play those. Rarely do we ever replace parts or repair anything. I thought maybe i'd try to get a little more knowledgeable about electronics in the last couple years. The best i've done is bringing a dead hard drive back to life.

Today I did my fist soldering. Well... desoldering. There was a ball of solder on a board that i actually had to solder off the thing before the board would become active. After a lot of trial and error i actually managed to do it.

I have completely fixed up dan goats' old xbox 360 that he gave to me after it crashed. It cost me 15 (maybe 10?) dollars for a new cd rom laser and another 5 dollars for Wd-40. Now the thing is running like a tank after having constant problems with the cdrom drive. First it wouldn't spin discs so i dismantled the thing and sprayed the spindle/rails in the cdrom. Then the laser went slowly but surely. Replaced that today. xboxes now (after a price drop) go for about 200 bucks so i think it was a decent investment, and i learned a whole lot. Hopefully i just put at least 5 more years into the (very fragile) system.

The only thign to fear is the red ring of death.nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-13786885310612382682008-12-05T07:51:00.000-08:002008-12-05T08:43:32.958-08:00birthdayWhenever i get a year older I kind of re-evaluate things. See what has changed. One thing i always try to do is psych myself up for beards. Every fucking year i think to myself. Yes. This is your year. Beardtown USA population Filardi. All year i see sweet hipster beards and lust after them. If i talk to Dane for more than an hour, he has a beard at the end of our conversation. Everywhere I seem to go, my naked chin mocks me in its nakedness. Once and a while i tempt fate. I try to grow one. Thinking- sure... maybe it just needs a couple days or something. I gotta give it time. Maybe i just have some slow face workers. The reward i get for that week of cringing looks on the subway is 8 weird half inch long hairs scattered on my face. I don't get a forest, i get a couple trees.

Imagine my surprise when i read on the huffington post today "obama: 'i can't grow facial hair." Maybe 2009 will be the year of the bare face with a few wiskers. If anyone can bring that bizare look into style, Obama can (yes we can).

My mother (god bless her!) picked me up a few things from amazon.

I'm probably most excited to read that John Hodgman book. Lately i'm on a daily show thats not the daily show kick. I've been listening to a lot of John Oliver's podcast with Andy Zaltzman called the bugle over at times online, and loving it. Then Hodgman showed up in another podcast i listen to called you look nice today: a journal of emotional hygiene and had some really fantasic and funny moments. He was pushing his book. I'll gladly accept the push. Daily show without daily show- i love it.

Incidently- you look nice today often jokes about a subject that I often feel is happening around me: not getting the MANual. Like- not knowing how to change a tire, or tie a tie. Not knowing dad things and feeling foolish. I guess I'm kind of at the age of feeling foolish with that stuff, getting over it and then learning it.

Birthdays are days of self evlauation milestones. I currently have over 50 physical games (this isn't counting intangible ones and zeros on the computer and console, or retro games beyond last generation of consoles) that i have bought and never played. This is getting out of hand. I atribute the huge splurge on games to acouple things. The last generation of consoles are on their way out over the next year or so. The ps2 is still holding on, but it won't be for long. So all those used games are going super cheap now. I can't resist the bargin, and with a finite number of used copies around I seem to panic and think to myself something along the lines of if I don't buy it now, it'll never be avalible again. Which- might be true, but probably won't be. Clearly, I am thrifty and paniced. I also atribute it to the fact that whenever i really start to collect or get into a new thing, i do it to a retarded extreme. The only thing that i've seem to collect at a moderate pace through most of my life has been comics. To change all this, or at least take it down a notch, I'm going to try not go into a brick and morter gamestop for video games for the next 4 months. It seems a little drastic to go from buying like crazy for a good six months (at least) to buying nothing, but i feel like i gotta get cut off. If i tell myself i'll do it in moderation nothing will change. Plus maybe now instead of buying games, i'll buy a few necessities that i always need but never seem to buy.

Speaking of- i got a pair of coffee mugs from the valve store. I don't know if this is a "speaking of games" or "speaking of stuff i always need but never buy for myself." Pretty much all the dishes in the house here are holly's. I'd like to pick up a few mugs at least considering my love of coffee. These do the trick.

The black mesa mug states "Delivering the Future" and the aperture labs one states "A trusted friend in science." Mugs are a nice low key way of displaying the pure nerd sensations i feel to valve without getting a really stupid nerdy shirt covered in text... although.... i do like that "good dog" shirt.

SO- nick filardi at 27: He is going to actually play the games he buys before he buys more. He is going to get the MANual. He is going to buy necessities. He is going to grow a beard, or bring weird wiskers into style. He might pay his taxes :)nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-2048550248664442132008-12-05T02:00:00.000-08:002008-12-05T02:01:18.672-08:00how nerdcore should be donesniper twins

nickfilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13727714824729488932noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4247171162985753497.post-8715022342301006862008-12-05T01:37:00.000-08:002008-12-05T01:39:16.436-08:00H.P.
